Why Becoming an Aquarian Shaman Can Change Your Life
by Linda Star Wolf Ph.D., author of the book: The Aquarian Shaman.
The shamanic path to our true selves begins with the first step and unfolds moment by moment, day by day. Embracing the Aquarian Shaman is central to my spiritual journey and my role in guiding others toward realizing their potential.
With over forty years of dedication to this path, I’ve helped thousands of soul seekers to respond to their calling. Whether you’re seeking to deepen your self-understanding or you’re at the cusp of a new journey, this book offers a gateway. I invite you to join with your beautiful, open heart and mind, as well as your curiosity and creativity, to explore your dreams and purpose, and to awaken the Aquarian Shaman within as your sacred guide on life’s adventure.
The Definition of a "Shaman"
While many people will offer different and conflicting definitions of shamanism, to me a “shaman” is a sacred transformer—someone who discerns and alters stagnant energies or outdated beliefs to alleviate restlessness and pain. Acting as a conduit between past, present, and future energies, a shaman facilitates the metamorphosis of the old into something new, much like trees shed their leaves or snakes their skin. We, too, should embrace letting go to make way for new growth.
Through continuous transformation, we can increase our capacity for joy and reduce the level of suffering necessary for awakening and positive change. As I learned from one of my dearest mentors, Seneca elder Twylah Nitsch, we can learn from wisdom or woe; it’s often preferable to foresee and avoid the pitfalls rather than repeatedly endure them. Addiction has often been defined as “doing the same old things repeatedly while expecting different results.”
I'm calling upon those who are ready for significant changes to explore the path of the Aquarian Shaman, a journey within everyone’s reach. It’s about surrendering to and embracing the mystery of life—acknowledging, as Gram Twylah used to say, that “If we knew exactly what the Great Mystery was, it could no longer be called the Great Mystery!”
Aquarian Shamanism is a transformative process, a willing exploration into new realms of love and wisdom, integrating them into our daily existence. Being shamanic means allowing parts of our lives to change or fall away, sometimes abruptly, sometimes gradually, so we may live with greater meaning and purpose. With deepening truth, humility, integrity, and grace, over time we step into our soul’s birthright and embodiment as Aquarian Shamans.
The Awakening Journey
Regardless of whether you are at the beginning of an awakening journey, or have become adept at working with multidimensional realities, perhaps at times you still find yourself depressed. You may feel stuck, helpless, hopeless, or anxious, or you may be subject to inexplicable outbursts of rage and anger. Or perhaps you simply have an inner longing to embrace your personal power and a meaningful way of life.
You may yearn to live fully in accordance with your dreams and visions, and to seek transformation, instead of settling for the temporary fixes that are ubiquitous within shallow, mainstream consciousness. These feelings have been a driving force for many spiritual seekers. Notably, over the past few decades, many people have sought a more personal spiritual connection to the divine, a direct experience rather than one mediated through a priest, spiritual director, or guru.
I refer to this intimate connection with divine forces as the Spiral Path of Direct Experience, or simply the spiral path, the path of an Aquarian Shaman.
Challenges That Test Our Resilience
In the course of our human lives, we inevitably meet with challenging events that test our resilience. Often we fall back on ineffective coping strategies such as overwork, perfectionism, addictive behaviors, or simply having an obsessive desire for control. These temporary fixes eventually fail, revealing the need for new, healthier tools in our “medicine bag” to support our well-being and allow us to pursue positive change, purposeful work, and fulfilling relationships.
Soul initiations, or life crises, force us to reassess our lives, our relationships, and our treatment of our bodies. By proactively choosing to engage and dance with the deepest parts of ourselves, and to step upon the shamanic spiral path of transformation, we will have put into place daily practices and skills that allow us to navigate life’s difficult waters, earthquakes, fires, and winds.
Relying on our Inner Aquarian Shaman
This inner work builds a strong self-relationship, making us our own best guides. While guidance from others can be valuable, learning to also rely on our inner Aquarian Shaman ultimately leads to choices that resonate with our deepest selves.
When we adopt daily practices that lead us to profound personal truths, we will awaken the Aquarian Shaman within. This process helps us recover parts of our being lost to trauma, so we may find joy and embrace a rich, full human experience. It is termed “soul retrieval” by some; however, many years ago I was taught by my Cherokee friend and soul sister, Teresa, to conceive of this metamorphosis as simply a deep releasing, a healing at a cellular level, and a renewal of the spirit. I now often describe this transformative work as soul return, shamanic consciousness, or soulful recovery.
Most of us bury and suppress our inner Aquarian Shaman during early childhood due to cultural conditioning. While our earliest soul loss is originally provoked by other people and by society, as we grow into adulthood our own inner guardians at the gate—our ego defenses—stand ever-vigilant for anything that threatens the ego’s power over us.
Our Egos Strive to Keep Us Asleep
Our egos employ a myriad of methods to keep us asleep, including endless distractions of our own making. These distractions not only keep us unconscious of self-destructive behaviors, they can also keep us dulled and disconnected from pain for limited periods of time. However, these distractions soon become addictive patterns, and we need more and more of them to keep us numb, asleep, and disassociated from external reality. These addictions can remain unseen by us, and even after we awaken to them, they can feel impossible to overcome.
Hopefully, one day, we become sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, and we realize we’ve had enough of trying to run away from discomfort and pain. At this point, the journey home can finally begin. We find the humility to admit we are feeling unfulfilled, and the courage to walk through those forbidden doors within us.
Much to our amazement, we discover hidden treasures in the shadowlands of ourselves, where our lost soul fragments were safeguarded until such time as they could be reclaimed, a time when continuing to deny our true selves would create dire consequences.
This soul surrender brings immense relief. It “hurts so good,” to quote John Mellencamp, because we are breaking through denial and stepping into the light of truth, regardless of the opinions of others or the dictates of our own frightened ego.
Shamanic Awakening and Awareness
Shamanic awakening and the continuing spiritual practice of living in daily communion with our shamanic awareness is both humbling and, at the same time, incredibly empowering. There is good reason for this dichotomy: both these feelings are true.
Once we can admit we have been asleep, going through the motions of being alive, the light of consciousness can break through the cracks in our armor and begin to spread through our whole awareness. After we’ve awakened, it becomes difficult to go back to sleep without even more severe consequences.
Our true selves remember that we are not on planet Earth by accident. If we are not here accidentally, then we must be here on purpose! Having had this revelation, we might prayerfully ask, “What is my sacred purpose?” We must then listen to what message arises from our beautiful awakened minds and hearts.
For a long time, many have been oblivious to their own spiritual slumber, as though an age-old enchantment had stripped us of our inborn wisdom and the divine power granted at birth by the Creator. Awakening the Aquarian Shaman within teaches us to traverse life’s challenges with grace and integrity, allowing us to make choices that serve everyone’s best interest, rather than reacting out of emotional impulse.
Navigating the Spiral Path of Life
Change is our inherent nature, yet sometimes, fearing the turmoil it brings, we confine ourselves to restrictive patterns for a semblance of stability. True strength lies in our power to be humble, flexible, and adaptable, continuously learning to navigate the spiral path of life, echoing the universe’s own spirals, and naturally reinventing ourselves as part of the natural world.
Embracing our inner shaman leads to a symbolic death of old patterns and a rebirth into new possibilities. It is about unifying within the heart, from a place of unconditional love, the baser energetic vibrations of human experience—“I need,” “I want,” and “I will”—with the elevated spiritual expressions of “I speak truth,” “I see truth,” and “I am truth.”
This inner alchemy is the heart of transformation, balancing our earthly and spiritual selves. It’s the work of the shaman to marry these dualities into a harmonious whole, and not deny one or the other, but instead birth within ourselves the sacred third of both/and. Engaging in this continuous transformation, we weave connection, harmony, and enchantment into all facets of existence, making the embrace of our inner Aquarian Shaman a compelling journey.
